Last week we talked about the 3 Foundational Pillars you need to help you reach any goal you set for yourself.
The first one is fun to talk about because it’s all about possibility and using your imagination
The second pillar is not as much FUN to discuss. How do you make planning ahead and prep work sound sexy?
If you’re anything like me, you like to forge ahead full speed; jump right into things saying to yourself, “Let’s DO this!”
Planning ahead and prep work seems so tedious and dull. It halts your momentum and dampens your enthusiasm.
Seems so adult and parental like
“Don’t leave the house without your coat”
“Limit yourself to 3 cookies or you’ll get a stomach ache”
“Eat your veggies so you’ll grow up to be strong”
Well, as unsexy as it sounds, I am here to tell you that planning ahead and prep work is the bomb! AND it can make your life a whole lot easier- freeing up your time to do other things that are more fun like sleeping in longer in the mornings.
How does it get any more exciting than that??
Planning ahead doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming.
It can be as simple as spending a few minutes planning what meals you want to make for the week and writing out a grocery list before you head out to the store.
With a list you know exactly what you need and are better able to resist impulse buys and less likely to end up with 3 things of cream cheese.
Taking planning ahead one step further- you can write down what you are going to eat the night before. Then you are less likely to be tempted by last minute decisions or impulse take – out orders.
At work I always write out my “to do” list for the next day in the evening before I leave. Now I write out my “to eat” list in the night before I go to bed.
Prep work takes some getting used to but the longer you do it, the faster and more efficient you become.
Every Sunday I spend about a half an hour preparing my lunches and a few breakfasts for the week.
I usually make salads in a quart jar. They store just fine for the week as long as you wait to add the dressing until the morning you are going to eat it.
For a video on how to prep salad jars check out my Facebook live video https://www.facebook.com/healthylivingisfun/videos/1577355578953260/
(as a side note- you can really see how the Beautycounter Overnight Peel has helped my skin since I started using it after filming this video!)
You can also prepare tupperwares of left over dinners or make in advance a few staple lunches you like to eat.
For breakfast, I stick to 3 basic meals. I will prepare overnight oats in a mason jar, or have packets of Nature’s Path instant oatmeal I throw in my lunch box with a container of berries, or I make egg bites or hard boiled eggs for the week.
Prep work used to take me an hour in the beginning but now I am so familiar with it that it literally takes me a half hour and it frees up SO much time in the mornings.
The days of crazed thinking of what to bring, frantically flinging things into my lunch bag, yelling at my kids to hurry up have been replaced with peacefully sleeping an extra half hour or writing in my journal.
So, to add peace to your life and actually reach the goals you set for yourself, practice these 2 pillars
- Believing in the Possibility of Success
- Planning Ahead & Prep Work
Next week we’ll talk about the 3rd pillar- Play the Tape All the Way Through
